3S Trained athlete claimed two gold medals at German Junior Championship last week
Reported by Mark Osborn
Jason Osborn, 15, 3S user since August of 2008 won two gold medals at German Junior Championships last week. The age groups racing were U17, U19 and U23. Jason was entered in the Lightweight Single and Lightweight Coxed Double Four. For the U17 the race distance is 1500m and not the normal 2000m. Thursday was the heats and Jasons aim was to finish first in both races so as to avoid the hoffnungslauf on the Friday. He had 2.5hours between races. He had to do just enough to win and save energy. Obviously he was never the fastest in the field because he did not need to be.
Saturday was Semi finals and again Jason needed to conserve energy and do enough to qualify. However Jason was not happy enough to qualify, he wanted to win and dominate and theirfore get the best lane on final day. Needless to say he did it but still the other semi final was quicker. Again this was due to Jason doing enough and no more.
Sunday was final day and the single was first. Jasons plan was to get the explosive start and sit about a boatlength in front and control the race and counter any attack. Attacks did come but Jason just reacted everytime with a quick burst of speed. However he decided to just have half a boat length lead as opposed to the boat length. Only in the last 500m did his lead increase and he did not need to do a sprint for the line. Again he had to conserve energy for the Double four final. Gold was served in a time of 5:34 over 1500m and 3.5 seconds ahead fo the silver medal winner. He would have been 5th in the final of the heavyweights and he was the fastest overall from his year!
Next up was the Double four and you sensed that Jason was up for it. He had not given everything to win the single and had enough energy to spare. The double fours aim was to get ahead and sit in front, just like the single. This was done and again the team countered any attack and won in a time of 4:56, and 1.5 seconds ahead of silver.
Two golds in two boat classes in his first U17 year! Jason dominated the lightweights and had he been able to enter the doublescull he could also have got gold, as in the previous regattas they always had the fastest time...
I do not believe it was talent alone that made Jason a winner. It was a combination of Talent, 3S and hard work.
